Laius en Jocasta waren de koningen van Thebe, toen ze trouwden gingen ze naar het orakel in Delphi, die voorspelde dat ze een zoon zouden krijgen die de moordenaar van zijn vader zou worden en later met zijn moeder zou trouwen.<\/p>\n

Om deze vreselijke voorspelling bij de geboorte te vermijden, werd haar eerstgeborene overgedragen aan een bediende met de opdracht hem te doden.<\/p>\n

Deze persoon nam het kind mee naar de berg Cithaeron, waar hij hem aan een boom met gaten in zijn voeten hing.<\/p>\n

Een herder redt de jongen en draagt hem over aan koning Polybius en zijn koningin Peribeus, koning en koningin van Korinthe.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Dit echtpaar voedde het kind op en gaf hem de naam Oedipus<\/strong> , wat ‘hij met gezwollen voeten’ betekent.<\/p>\n

Als tiener vermoedt hij door de roddels van zijn klasgenoten dat hij niet de legitieme zoon is van de koningen van Korinthe, en om zijn zorgen op te helderen, bezoekt hij het orakel van Delphi, die hem dezelfde voorspelling onthult die hij had gedaan om de koningen van Thebe.<\/p>\n

Om deze noodlottige uitkomst te voorkomen, verlaat Oedipus Korinthe en gaat naar Thebe met de bedoeling nooit meer terug te keren.<\/p>\n

Onderweg vindt hij Layo, die hij heeft vermoord vanwege een ruzie onderweg, zonder te weten dat hij zijn vader was.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

De koning van Thebe wordt de broer van koningin Jocasta, Creon, die de hand van zijn zus aanbiedt aan degene die het raadsel van de sfinx oplost, een monster gestuurd door Hera.<\/p>\n

Oedipus slaagt erin de raadsels van de sfinx op te lossen en wint de hand van de koningin met wie hij later zal trouwen.<\/p>\n

Geen van beiden wist dat ze moeder en zoon waren en ze kregen vier kinderen: Polyneices, Eteocles, Ismene en Antigone.<\/p>\n

Kort nadat een plaag de stad heeft getroffen en tijdens het onderzoek om de dader van die plaag te ontdekken, ontdekt hij dat zijn echte moeder zijn huidige vrouw is en dat de man die hij bij deze gelegenheid heeft vermoord zijn vader was.<\/p>\n
